ABOUT DONALD

Texas Illustrated Through Art

"Not every person has been given the talent to be an artist. I’ve always said it would be a boring world if it was. One thing that amazes me about being an artist is the appreciation of people that really value my work. It’s not the monetary value that’s important to me, it’s the appreciation of my work that I love so much."

                                                      --- Donald Dunn

Donald Dunn is a Realism Artist, native to Texas. His love for Texas is fervently expressed throughout each of his paintings. To view one of his works is like taking a backroad along the Texas landscape -serene, resolute, and absolutely breathtaking. He has the ability to capture light and color with exceptional depth and detail.  His love for nature and his ability to paint native Texas wildlife was discovered early in his life. Donald attributes his talent to paint nature to the one who created it, his Lord, Jesus Christ. As a young boy he also had the opportunity to observe nature on the river bottoms and pastures of his grandparents’ farms in South and Central Texas.

His passion for wildlife led him to study Forest Game Management at Stephen F. Austin University and later pursue his love of art at Texas A & I University in Kingsville, where he began the development of his art career.  He attributes success in mastering color and light to artists and teachers Robert H. Garden of Irving, the late Dick Turner of Corpus Christi, and Dalhart Windberg of Georgetown.

He has painted in oil, his preferred medium, semi-professionally since 1968 and professionally since 2002 after retiring from a thirty-two-year career with Southwestern Bell Telephone.  His paintings and prints can be found in homes of friends and co-workers including corporate executives of SBC and many private and corporate collections across the U.S.

A native Texan born in Kenedy, Donald and his wife Debbie moved from Corpus Christi, Texas, where they resided for 38 years. They moved to Choate, Texas in 2009, where he now has his studio.

Published Works

Donald has been a contributing artist for the South Texas Celebrity Weekend, now known as the South Texas Charity Weekend since 2004. Donald’s work has been published as cover art for the Texas Outdoors Journal as well as King Ranch Institute for Cattle Management.

Excerpt from Texas Outdoors Journal on Dunn:

"The start of the New Year means a chance to take advantage of outdoor opportunities that occur during winter months. Native Texas artist Donald Dunn's "Reds on Baffin Bay" captures a flight of redheads coming in to land near a pod of redfish feeding in shallow water. Adding to this scene is a brilliant sunrise that illustrates the perfect way to start a new day in a New Year. Hunters and anglers alike are encourages to take advantage of "blast and cast" opportunities before the duck season ends on January 35. Get out and experience first hand what Dunn has seen and captured on canvas."
